Children and adolescents

Life can be difficult at any age. This is perfectly normal and part of the maturation process. Counselling and psychotherapy can help children and adolescents cope, come to terms with and grow through the difficulties and challenges they are facing.

At Interspiral we believe that the child or adolescent is at the centre of the counselling relationship. They determine what they talk about, what they do, the pace at which they work and how many sessions they have. It is their therapist’s job to facilitate this process, to listen, to support, to guide and to keep them safe.

Play is the child’s natural world, it is where they discover, learn and grow. It is an integral part of working with children of any age and where the therapist seeks to meet the child at their level and on their terms. It may also be part of working with adolescents alongside talking and other interventions.

Sessions last for fifty minutes are conducted in accordance with the BACP’s Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions and with the government’s Working Together to Safeguard Children guidance.

Usually a set number of sessions are agreed but sometimes it is left that therapy will be open ended. Either way, there is an initial conversation between the therapist and the child’s parent(s) or between the therapist and the adolescent.
