Over the last couple of months I have read three stand out books. Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart, Why I’m no longer talking to white people about race by Reni Eddo-Lodge and Tribes by Seth Godin.
Shuggie was evocative and took me right back to my drinking days, Why I’m no longer…… made me pause and think about things quite differently but Tribes was a game changer that has challenged both the way that I think and the way that I act.
The concept is simple. Bring together a group of people who believe in an idea, a theme or a mission (your tribe), encourage and enable them to connect and start a movement and watch great things happen.
It doesn’t look like rules have much of apart to play but there are a few things I need to remember: 1. Stop being afraid (what really is the worst thing that could happen) 2. Remember that passion begets passion 3. Stay curious and inquisitive 4. Question and challenge the status quo. 5. Know when to lean in and when to back off 6. Stay convinced that doing nothing is not an option.
It’s early days for me on this particular journey but I’m excited about what I see and where it may take me. Right now I’m curious about the way that packs and chapters fit into the whole tribe thing. Perhaps they are building blocks but perhaps they have no place at all.
